This seems like the kind of memories Mary would think back on during hard times. Not entirely perfect memories of course, since she's injured, but memories of family who clearly care about her.

That advice can be read as really heartwarming or really depressing and cold, though I imagine he wants Mary to get the former out of it.

Absolutely, or a little bit of both. But you're right in that Raheem's intention was to console her and give her some hope about life.
