Or maybe that other city? ^_^ in any case, there'll be some mojo before the day AND issue is done!

Ouch. Does Mary have any supernatural healing abilities, at least? It'd still hurt, but at least she'd spare the criminals' victims a beating from which they wouldn't recover

It has been hinted at in the first chapter that Mary possesses an unnatural resilience to harm (wherein she was smashed into asphalt that broke more readily than her body). But some of the "perks" that come with her abilities require active usage or at least a "readiness" for her to make use of them. At the young age of sixteen, without much exploration of her abilities overall. It's difficult to say what she is capable of. At least consciously. We'll be exploring this a bit in coming pages and issues though. In any case, Mary's also an idealist and interventionist (as also seen at the age of 22 in chapter 1). She would have dove into that situation regardless. And maybe sometimes it's worthwhile to think things through.
Wow, that turned into a more in-depth reply than I intended! ^_^

I suppose it's all for the best that the general townsfolk don't know how powerful Mary's "mojo" is, since fear makes normal people do abnormal things, but I can't help thinking that a largish pit blown under the feet of the hoodlums might have had a dampening effect on their desire to steal. :)
Of course, it's also true that a largish hole blown THROUGH one of the hoodlums would have an even greater effect on the survivors.....

Well they've only seen "small" incidents of Mary's mojo back when she was a kid. They still remember though. And aren't too keen on getting close. Unless she charges at them I guess and you see a chance at stealing a hard-earned days pay. ;P
And Raheem isn't just teaching her to be careful for the sake of others. True, he's teaching her to be respectful of life in general but he also probably realises that reckless use of her power would come back to bite her somehow. Let's hope his lessons pay off!

It's sad to see she let the bullies win, but at the same time, you kind-of know it'd be worse for everyone if she hadn't. :/

So in a way, if you think about it, she didn't actually let the bullies win!
I guess they won the actual fist-fight though...
