Hole in the ground? Don't worry, the Paranormal Investigation Unit is on the scene!
Agent Bexley of the P.I.U, seen here interviewing confused colleague of mustachioed conductor from the previous pages, was first seen in Chapter 1 - Part 2, Page 14 talking on the phone with Abraham.
In other news, thank you so much for reading Voidchild! If you enjoy my lil' comic, please consider subscribing, rating, commenting and/or sharing to make me even happier! ^_^

If whatever took him also wanted to delay some trains, it certainly worked

There's some intense redirecting of train lines happening off-panel!

That's a remarkably regular hole. If it were a a point source of destruction, like a black hole, different substances would have been affected at different rates. Dirt and gravel would have been sucked in at a greater rate than concrete. The circular nature of the hole speaks more to a portion of reality simply ceasing to exist. This lends itself more to being a random event than an attack, and the conductor was simply unlucky rather than the target.
Plenty to chew on, here. :)

Hmm, alright... lemme think on how to broach this...
There was definitely a phenomena here, and some of the things you mention are kinda eerily accurate. Like, how extremely localized it appears here, how "neat" the hole is. Some thing's I'll refrain from commenting on, but will be able to speak more clearly on in a few pages if need be.
It's meant to resemble something you've seen earlier in the comic, only smaller in scale. However, it might be a bit hard to tell just because I've developed my art and might have shifted the appearance slightly because of this.
Gosh, having readers like yourself is really keeping me on my toes. Like I said before, some of the things you've pointed out are impressively close to what happened here.

I just have to appreciate the first panel! The scenery inspires me...

Wow? Inspiring? Thanks, I don't think anyone's said that about my work. It's a very technical shot though, and I have mixed feelings about those personally. Not that I'm unhappy with it. I'm very happy. But I always have the most fun when I draw "on feeling" rather than get to technical. ^_^
