Do his powers come from a substance, whereas Mary just has 'em 👀

Alternatively, those could be pills that suppress his powers- so he doesn't have to put any effort into holding back.
Or they're just breath mints.

Haha, I love the speculation. But they are just cigarettes. A different angle could've maybe helped convey this better. :P he could probably use breath mints though, what with having cigarette breath! :D

Hah, I never even thought it might be construed as that. In fact, they are regular old cigarettes. :) just as seen from just above. I guess, in a way, he has a substance that he thinks calms him down. ;)

A bunch of stuff is happening. A punch to the face, a relatively soft landing in snow (cursing over said snow a second later), our heroine bravely flying off and our so far despicable new guy on the scene grabbing another smoke while returning his eyes to normal as we transition to a new scene on the next page!
(and an author narrating said page's contents ^_^)

Hah! I love this comparison. I suppose it was pretty delicate considering what we've seen her do in the past. But that's grown-up Mary for you, trying her damndest not to smack people's head's off. ^_^
But the most important observation you made is the latter one. That punch didn't seem to discourage him at all, did it?

She makes a lot of sudden moves. In this case it may have been a combination of what he said and the personal space she invaded. She spent six years alone in a forest after all. ^_^

Amir has a very punchable face for some reason! And yes, Mary’s kinda leaning into the enemy of all things angle here!
