A pinch, in today's Voidchild!
You might not recognize these three chuckleheads since they look a lil' different from how they did chasing Catherine down that dark alleway in the opening scene of Chapter 1. ;)

Mary's intervention in Movian's affairs caught up with her pretty quick. He does have a vested interest in taking her alive, but both him and these guys have no qualms about how roughly they go about it.

I guess these guys wouldn't do that though, considering their track records with kids...

From his (Movian’s) point of view, Mary is probably less a person than a piece of rare and exotic goods. The kind he deals in. And this one’s supposedly a myth and legend even to other creatures of myth and legend. Doesn’t get much rarer than that! ;)

You could argue she's got bad luck. On the other hand, you could argue that her proactive nature also causes these situations to happen.
But I'm not philosophical like that. ^_^

Oh, who knows. Movian might’ve shot it off the roof of Galileo Mercantile for all we know. ;) You are right in that he probably wouldn’t entrust these guys to handle it without making sure it was fool-proof though. Whether he developed it himself or not is a mystery for now.
It’s also an argument for a single very important target, or a category of targets to which the Voidchild might belong. Or as you said, maybe a group of Voidchildren? Another mystery for another day and/or page.
The only thing more mysterious are these vague replies of mine. :o

Hah, id like to think I’m solving the mystery along with readers and not in opposition of them. ;)
On that note, whether that was a point of yours or not, hearing reader theories is far more entertaining than me listing things that may or may not be true anyway... *spooky music*
