Their arrangement should involve getting Mary to a tailor too. Torn at the knee can pass as a fashion thing, but I don't know about torn at the shoulder or completely missing a sleeve.

Well, she's being kinda indirectly direct. Maybe that cancels out the directness. Either way! She's definetly gunning for that job! Maybe not for the same reasons she originally did though. =x

I love the chillness of this scene as well as Marys awesome no nonsense ...ness xD.
Im also glad Abes back into the story! Cant wait to see Mary fair with a team helping her out, hype!

Thank you! It's nice to do a calm scene once in a while. Even one where the other participant isn't a nihlistic sociopath. ;)
As for their interaction, Abe's and Mary's personalities and their exchanges are some of my favourites from the comic. Abe likes to tease friendly and some of that might land with Mary and some of it may not. ^_^

One has to wonder how far ahead Mary thought about this. But perhaps she's not expecting a long-term career?
You are super-duper right in that it's maybe not in the spirit of this "arrangement" to obfuscate the truth. Perhaps the harsh reality of the outside world coupled with not-so-great recent company has taught Mary a thing or two though. =[

What you're seeing, in my author-mind, is the result of Mary's socialization process. She got a solid foundation from Raheem, which is a major reason for her kinder side. But she did spend six years basically isolated from other human beings. So whereas you might be reading Abe correctly, Mary approaches the situation more cautiously because she's probably catching up on her social skills which include reading and interacting with people.
That's why I sometimes write her as very direct. Because, in my mind, she's not very accustomed to some of the subtler aspects of human behaviour that you pick up as you grow through your teenage-young adult years.
This is my own interpretation of her, from an author perspective. But I very much want people to form their own interpretations for her actions. It's Always interesting to hear about. As long as her behaviour feels believable against the context of what we know about her, I'm happy. ^_^

Ultimately, if they do have an arrangement then it is on her terms. At least at first. I think that they know she can leave at any time she wants to and they really can't do much about it short of killing her.
And at that point they will take losses for no real useful reason.
But once you have someone used to working with/for you then you get them used to your authority. From that point you can only hope your new bosses are good people. Just saying.

I love the stuff you're bringing up here! It's stuff that I, as the author, don't always stop to think about. But readers are basically coming at this from Mary's perspective, and don't necessarily know a whole lot about what the Paranormal Investigation Unit is. What the leadership and authorities in the organisation is like and how they would take to all this.
I basically thought: "Welp, Mary wants Abe's help finding Amir, so she'd be more careful about giving away her true identity now than she was in the previous issue when she needed help finding a solution to the World-ending problem. Great work, time to eat too much ice-cream!"
Readers are so much smarter than me. XD

I would like to add that a secret identity is only useful if you have a pre-established identity and friends/family/responsibilities to protect.
Her family is dead, she does not have a job, she has no place to stay, and ... Well, you get the idea.
The paranormal unit may even accept a "My name is Jane Doe." As a start. She may even bluntly say it is not her real name and get away with it.
Depends on how much they want her.
